IUI is a gentle, minimally invasive fertility treatment that is often recommended as the first step for couples beginning their fertility journey. Carefully washed and concentrated sperm is inserted directly into the uterus at the time of ovulation, maximising the chance of natural fertilisation without the complexity of IVF.

Most of the cumulative benefit of IUI comes in the first three or four cycles. If those do not work, we will recommend moving on rather than repeating something that is not working for you.
What it costs

What actually happens, in order
Nothing here should be a surprise on the day.
Consultation call and cycle planning
We decide whether to work with your natural cycle or use mild oral or injectable medication to encourage ovulation, based on why we are doing IUI in the first place.
Follicle tracking
Two or three short ultrasound scans track the growing follicle so we know exactly when it will release. Timing is most of what makes IUI work.
Trigger
When the follicle reaches the right size, a trigger injection sets ovulation to a predictable time, usually 36 hours later.
Sperm preparation
Your partner gives a sample on the day. The laboratory washes and concentrates it, separating the most motile sperm from seminal fluid, which cannot be placed in the uterus.
The insemination
A soft catheter passes through the cervix and releases the prepared sperm into the uterus. It takes about ten minutes and feels similar to a smear test. You rest briefly and then go about your day.
Two week wait
A pregnancy test 14 days later. If it is negative we review together whether to repeat, adjust, or change approach.

The factors that genuinely move the result
These are the things worth your attention. Most of what circulates online is not.
Timing
IUI has a narrow window. Done a day early or late it is close to useless, which is why we track rather than estimate.
Post wash sperm count
The number of motile sperm after preparation predicts success better than the raw count on the report. We measure it and tell you the number.
Tubal status
At least one open tube is essential. If this has not been confirmed by HSG or laparoscopy, confirming it comes before, not after, spending money on cycles.
Age
IUI success falls with age faster than IVF success does. Past a certain point, repeating IUI costs time you may not have.
Where we differ from the standard advice
- Three to four well timed cycles is the usual answer for a good candidate. Cumulative success builds across those and then flattens.
- If your assessment shows IUI is unlikely to work, we will tell you at the first consultation rather than running cycles that look like progress.
- Lying down afterwards does not change the result. You rest for ten minutes because it is comfortable, not because sperm placed in the uterus falls out when you stand up.
