You have been trying for a year or two

Start with a full assessment of both partners. In a good number of cases the answer is not IVF at all. Ovulation problems can respond to medication, mild male factor can respond to IUI, and a blocked tube or a polyp found early changes everything.

The mistake to avoid is spending eighteen months on treatments that were never suitable, because nobody checked tubal status or ran a proper semen analysis first.

A previous cycle did not work

Bring everything. The stimulation protocol, the drug doses, the number of eggs retrieved and how many were mature, the fertilisation report, the embryo grades, the lining thickness on transfer day. A failed cycle contains a great deal of information, and most patients are never shown it.

We read the old file properly before recommending anything. Sometimes the answer is a different protocol, sometimes it is investigating the uterus rather than repeating the cycle.

The semen analysis came back abnormal

First, repeat it. A single result varies a great deal with abstinence period, recent illness and how the sample was handled. Second, find the cause rather than working around it blindly. Hormonal causes and varicocele are treatable, and heat exposure at work is more often relevant than people expect.

Where the count is very low or zero, ICSI and surgical retrieval mean this is very rarely the end of the road.

Egg freezing preserves quality as it is today. The value of doing it depends almost entirely on your age and ovarian reserve now, so the first step is measuring both and getting a realistic estimate of how many eggs a cycle would give you.
