Personalised diagnosis
Comprehensive testing for both partners: hormone panels, ultrasound, semen analysis, and genetic screening if required. Usually within 5 to 7 days.
Ovarian stimulation, 9 to 12 days
Daily injections encourage several follicles to mature instead of the usual one. Three or four short scans let us watch the response and adjust the dose.
Trigger and egg retrieval
A final injection matures the eggs. Retrieval happens 34 to 36 hours later under sedation and takes about 20 minutes. You go home the same day.
Fertilisation in the laboratory
Eggs meet sperm on the same day, either conventionally or by ICSI if sperm parameters need it. We call you the next morning with the fertilisation report.
Embryo culture and grading, 3 to 5 days
Embryos grow in time lapse incubators so they are graded without being disturbed. You get an update on how many are developing and at what quality.
Transfer, then the pregnancy test
One embryo is usually transferred, which takes a few minutes and needs no anaesthesia. A blood test follows about 12 days later, and whatever the result you get a proper conversation about what comes next.

The factors that genuinely move the result
These are the things worth your attention. Most of what circulates online is not.
Age
The single strongest predictor, because it drives egg quality. This is why we quote your chances by age band rather than as one clinic-wide number.
Ovarian reserve
AMH and antral follicle count tell us how many eggs we are likely to retrieve. Low reserve does not mean IVF cannot work, but it changes the protocol and the expectation.
Sperm quality
Count, motility, morphology and DNA fragmentation all affect fertilisation and embryo development. We assess this properly rather than treating it as a footnote.
The uterine lining
An embryo of excellent quality still needs somewhere to implant. Polyps, fibroids, adhesions and thin lining are checked and corrected before transfer, not after a failed cycle.
Laboratory conditions
Air quality, temperature stability and handling technique measurably change embryo development. This is the part of the process patients cannot see and clinics rarely discuss.
Lifestyle, at the margins
Smoking, weight and alcohol have real effects, though smaller than the internet suggests. We will tell you what is worth changing and what is not worth the stress.
What we tell every patient before they start
- IVF often takes more than one cycle. We plan and cost from the beginning on the basis of two to three, so the number in your head is the realistic one.
- A good embryo can still fail to implant, and often nobody can say why. Anyone who claims certainty is guessing.
- Adding expensive extras to a cycle rarely improves the outcome. We explain which have evidence behind them and which do not, and we do not sell the ones that do not.
- If your chance of a live birth is very low, we will say so plainly and discuss donor options, even though that is not the conversation either of us wants to have.

Usually one. Transferring two raises the chance of twins far more than it raises the chance of a baby, and a twin pregnancy carries real risk for both mother and babies. Where a second embryo is genuinely justified we discuss it with you first.
They are vitrified and stored in your name. You decide each year whether to continue storage, and you sign consent covering what happens to them in every circumstance. Nothing is done with your embryos without your written instruction.
Most people do. Scans are short and we schedule them early where we can. Plan one day off for retrieval and ideally a quiet day after transfer.
We review the entire cycle with you, including the embryology notes, and tell you what we learned. Sometimes that changes the plan for next time, sometimes it means considering a different route. That review is included, not an extra consultation.
